Best gifts gift guide

You may have shunned the avocado green Pyrex mixing bowls you remember from your childhood. I know I did. (Although now, I wish I had those olive green bowls instead of my plastic ones.) But Andrea Fowler, who pens the lifestyle blog Keeping It Cozy cherishes the Pyrex nesting bowl set she was given for Christmas one year, a thoughtful gift from Mom. You can read the whole story here.

What’s old is always new again at some point, right? I mean I am currently helping a client figure out where to place her new record player in her living room.

For me, old is always better. I constantly tell Scott that I want our furniture and things to have a story. I didn’t register for china, crystal or silver as wedding gifts because: 1.) I like to change up the look of my table, and I don’t think I would ever use new china enough to warrant the cost. 2.) My thoughtful mom gave me her classic Crown Victoria Lovelace pattern (shown below), which I incorporate in with some of my more modern pieces.

Best gifts gift guide

Continuing on with the best gifts gift guide series, today I bring you a piece with some history. (If you’ve missed any, you can revisit to see Scott’s and my favorites, something I gave an old friend, presents I made coworkers and ideas for collectors.)

Blogger and artist Susie Harris received a treasure her dad found in New Orleans: an antique carousel horse that she keeps atop the bookshelf in her home. You can read all about it here.

Susie’s carousel horse got me thinking. Tiny rocking objects and animals look so sweet in nurseries. While Scott and I are not currently looking to design such a space, I’m still collecting furnishings and accessories for it (don’t read anything into that; I’m not pregnant, just a collector, remember?).

Here in Switzerland, swans are everywhere. We don’t live far from Lake Geneva, and watching the swans glide through the water is so peaceful. They are truly majestic and beautiful birds. I’m toying with the idea of printing one of Scott’s swan pics (we have lots) from here in black and white to hang somewhere in our house. Maybe above his dresser?

So here’s what I’m after in terms of nursery décor inspired by the bird in the water.

A site to bookmark

A few weeks ago, I introduced you to a favorite online flea market. Today, I have another site you should definitely bookmark. The savvy women behind One Kings Lane launched a new marketplace for vintage and used goods. And Hunters Alley definitely has some goods.

It’s not a site you should venture to in search of a bargain. When a velvet embroidered pillow has an asking price of $265, you know you won’t be getting a steal on anything. But if you’re in the market for something specific that you haven’t found anywhere else, Hunters Alley is worth searching. I would also come window shopping here if I wanted the real deal in terms of vintage or antique.

Here are a few of the things I love.
