Decor with some history

Scott and I stayed in the coolest place in Berlin. It was in what used to be East Berlin and decorated with some of the communist-era kitsch.

A picture of the German communist politician, Erich Honecker, who led East Germany from 1971 to the weeks preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, hangs prominently in the lobby. And that’s just where this retro charm begins.IMG_6045

Our room had this cool, retro wallpaper, and though the room was pretty minimal in its decoration, attention was definitely in the details, like the fabric-wrapped hangers on the coat rack.

I totally dig this whole retro vibe. While I would never do an entire room in mid-century modern, I appreciate what a piece or two can do for a room—add warmth, give the decor some history. I mean, I’ve purchased my fair share of mid-century modern pieces. Remember my dresser turned entertainment center, my $7.50 cane-back chair, and my $17.50 cane-back chair?

Here’s how to get elements of this look now.

Do the Stretch wallpaper, ($51/roll)

Three vintage fabric-covered hangers, ($26.69)

Modern chair, ($249)

Turner side table, ($210)

Vintage linen table runner, ($13)

Pair of mid-century modern lamps, ($150)

Pair of carved nightstands
